Rhinoplasty Northam Devon (EX39): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, after an injury, because of a birth defect or so as to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Northam, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Northam
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of treating breathing issues which stem from natural causes or external injury. A person who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying issue could suffer from sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing under exercise. This can be down to various reasons and a doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the precise cause.
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Septorhinoplasty surgery can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. The shape of the septum and nose may be strengthened by inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
When it comes to reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, these procedures are usually done under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most patients expected to go home the same day. If your surgery isn't too complicated, your surgeon might recommend a local anaesthetic, but this will be discussed during the consultation. The surgical procedure typically involves an incision at the base of the nose to gain access to the internal areas. In many cases, there's no need to break the bones of the nose; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or adjusted to enhance the overall strength and shape of the nose. To help with recovery, splints or casts may be placed to maintain the nose's shape and minimise swelling.
The sites for the incisions made at the base of the nose are selected with great care to help reduce the chances of noticeable scarring. Patients often discover that they won't see any visible scars after the wounds have healed. Recovery periods for reconstructive rhinoplasty patients are generally alike, with most advised to rest for a week or two. This involves avoiding strenuous activities and heavy breathing for at least the first week. Additionally, applying ice to the affected area can aid in recovery, along with a specific plan for nasal cleaning.
Following your operation, a follow-up appointment will be arranged to remove any splints or casts from your nose, and you should find that you can return to work and your normal daily activities at that point. It's really best to avoid any contact sports or anything that could lead to accidental bumps to your nose, like ball games or racquet sports, for about six to eight weeks after surgery. Once this time has passed, your nose should be well on its way to healing, allowing you to resume your previous lifestyle.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Northam
If you're reshaping your nose for personal reasons, it's known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also called a nose job), and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or follow-up consultations. However, it may be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS with a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Northam:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
There are numerous reasons behind the desire for cosmetic rhinoplasty, and it's important to first discuss this with your GP before consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon in Northam. A personalised approach will then be crafted for you, ensuring you have a realistic understanding of what the surgery can achieve. However, do keep in mind that not all individuals may qualify for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This can depend on their skin and bone structure, medical history, and the risk of adverse reactions or the possibility of worsening the existing issues.
During your physical examination, the surgeon will assess which areas can be changed by examining the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage. This may also help in predicting any breathing changes after surgery. You'll discuss your expectations and reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling self-conscious at this stage is normal since discussing perceived imperfections is uncomfortable for most. However, it's crucial that the surgeon sees you've thought everything through and fully understand the possible risks and outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Do not wear contacts or glasses.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and consequently avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Northam Rhinoplasty Questions
Not too long ago I was reviewing the questions folks in Northam ask about rhinoplasty. Many of our web visitors e-mailed in compelling queries that are worthy of mentioning here. The most pertinent ones appeared to be, What happens if you sneeze after rhinoplasty? What is rhinoplasty procedure? How long does rhinoplasty last? How much would a rhinoplasty cost? How long after rhinoplasty can I smoke? When can you fly after rhinoplasty? When did rhinoplasty became popular? I hope that the majority of those queries have been covered in the preceding article, if there are any left to be answered a rhinoplasty "Q&A" feature is at present being created. My gratitude goes out to Marley Clarke, Sami Hawkins, Eisa Slater and Trinity Birch from Northam, for finding the time to put their excellent questions. Relevant contributions were likewise received from Kennedy Pickering in Roundswell, Robert Massey in Yelland and Claire Mackie in Newton Tracey.
